The 2020 Subaru WRX STI S209 Costs Nearly Twice as Much as a WRX STI

The first S-badged car from STI to come to the USA is mind-poppingly expensive.

The Subaru WRX STI is an outstanding performance sedan and a relative bargain with a starting price of $36,995. It might not be the best looking car in the world and doesn't have the newest engine, but it doesn't necessarily matter. It has a huge wing and drives fantastically, shaming cars that cost twice as much.

That's what makes this awkward, because now there's a WRX STI that costs nearly twice as much.

Subaru's newest STI is the S209, a special edition version limited to 209 units for the US. It has a 341-hp version of the long-serving EJ 2.5 liter flat-four, 19 inch forged wheels, a widebody, bigger brakes, and an updated suspension, among other bits. All of that gets you a WRX STI that starts at $63,995.

That's a huge price jump. For that price, you are getting something special and the first S-Line car from STI to enter the US. It's surely brilliant (we're yet to drive it), but if you can't swing the extra money, the regular STI is still a wonderful car that you can modify the hell out of and get close (or beyond) S209 performance.
