The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Is Getting a Torquey Diesel V-6

Joining the JL Wrangler's 2.0-liter turbo-four and 3.6-liter V-6 is a diesel with 442 lb-ft of torque

When the new JL Wrangler debuted for 2018, two engines were available—a revised version of Chrysler's venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, and a new 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. For 2020, a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 joins the mix, giving the Wrangler a huge boost in torque, and likely fuel economy.

The engine is Fiat Chrysler's new EcoDiesel V-6—which debuted with the 2020 Ram 1500—and it will serve up 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. Jeep is only offering it with four-door Wrangler Unlimited models, and as standard, it's paired with an eight-speed automatic. If you want a manual-transmission Wrangler, you'll have to stick with the gas V-6.

And speaking of the Pentastar, it will come with FCA's eTorque mild-hybrid technology in automatic-transmission Wrangler Sahara models. The eTorque system pairs the internal-combustion engine with a small electric motor driven off a 48-volt electrical architechture to boost torque and fuel economy. Wrangler Sahara customers will still be able to order the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with eTorque for 2020, as well.

We still don't know two of the Wrangler EcoDiesel's most important numbers—fuel economy and price. A Jeep spokesperson told R&T that fuel-economy figures are pending EPA certification, and pricing will be announced closer to the Wrangler EcoDiesel's market launch, which should happen by the end of the year.
