Someone Please Take This Never-Raced 944 Turbo Cup Car to the Track

This Porsche has been deprived of racing all its life. Whoever buys it needs to change that.

In the mid-1980s, Porsche founded a spec racing series using its top-of-the-line 944, the Turbo (also known as the 951). The events were usually support races that were held at major venues, often involving popular drivers. The spec cars got substantial engine and chassis upgrades over the standard Turbo road car, and just a handful were built. This one has never been raced, and it's coming up for sale via RM Sotheby's in September 2019. You should buy it and take it to the track immediately.

Porsche 944 Turbo Cup cars got a slew of improvements from the factory before being sent out to compete. Attached to the inline-four engine is a larger KKK K26-8 turbocharger paired with a revised tune, along with a magnesium intake manifold and oil pan. The transmission, clutch, differential, and axles were all beefed up to handle the extra power and constant abuse. The A/C, power seats, leather upholstery, sun visors, power windows, power steering, rear wiper, headlight washers, fender liners, storage pockets, and rear trunk release were all deleted in the name of weight savings. There's also upgraded struts, shocks, springs, suspension mounts, as well as an adjustable ABS system, bigger brakes with racing pads, a transmission oil cooler, and a lightweight battery. The telephone-dial-style wheels are also made of magnesium. The 0-62 sprint happens in just 5.3 seconds, and top speed is nearly 170 mph.

Originally imported by Porsche-VW of Canada, it was a stand-in for the Rothmans Cup series in the event a competitor would need a spare car. It sat in the shop at Noden Autohaus, a dealership in Edmonton, until it was eventually sold to a private party. From there it was sold to a buyer in Ohio, who commissioned a repaint in its original color, while retaining the Rothmans livery.

The car was first registered in 1990, and it's been driven 14,903 km (around 9300 miles) since, none of which has been has been at the track, which is a shame. Whoever buys this car needs to take it to a Porsche club race where it belongs. It's going up for auction at RM Sotheby's on September 28th in Ohio with a sale estimate of $75,000 to $100,000.
