The Can-Am series is where McLaren made its mark as a top-level race car manufacturer, so it's always cool when one of its cars from the era pops up for sale. This 1971 M8E is currently up for grabs on eBay Motors. You should buy it.
Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
The M8E was designed as a customer version of McLaren's M8B, built in the early 1970s. Like the factory team McLaren version, the M8E is powered by a big-block Chevrolet V-8 mounted behind the driver, sending power to the wheels via four-speed manual transmission. According to the seller, this particular car was campaigned in the 1972 and 1973 seasons by Ed Felter. The seller also says the car was "badly wrecked" in 1973, and restored in 1993.
According to the description, the car is currently in great shape, and ready to participate in vintage racing events. It's equipped with a Lucas injection system, inboard brakes, Lockheed brake calipers, adjustable Koni shocks, and rare original McLaren springs. It will be sold with the original wrecked chassis, and a host of spares.
The car is currently listed on eBay in Santa Paula, California with a Buy It Now price of $375,000 or best offer. That's a lot of money for an old race car, we know, but considering how cool this one is, we'd say it's worth it.
