A Lancia 037 Stradale Only Knows Fast and Faster

With Alister McRae behind its wheel, the last rear-wheel drive WRC champion's street edition becomes what Lancia had in mind.

As a mid-engined rear-wheel drive car against Audi's all-wheel drive Quattros, the Lancia 037 was probably not the favorite to win the 1983 World Rally Championship. But, the Italians were more than ready for a fight that year, and as the 037 was the very essence of Abarth's and Lancia's motorsport experience, Walter Röhrl ended up in a car that would pretty much go wherever he wanted, on any terrain. And once he realized that, 1983 was Lancia's.

At the same time as 037 race cars made supercharged four-cylinders seem superior to Audi's turbo-fives, roughly 200 people got the milder 037 experience in the seats of road-legal Stradales. Today, these cars are on the top of many collector's lists, and not just because they happen to be Pininfarina-bodied WRC champions. Another strong selling point is that on a tight and sufficiently empty road, a good 037 Stradale can still make you feel like Walter Röhrl.

Or rally racer Alister McRae for that matter, since in this latest Forza Motorsport promotion video, produced by eGarage, he's the lucky one enjoying an 037 on the famous Maryhill Loops Road. And as far as driving experiences go, this is up there.
